- PKZIP may be downloaded from PKWare.
- Winzip may be downloaded from Winzip.
- WinRAR - another decompression program covering rar formats WinRAR
- The Graphics manipulation tools GifConstructionSet and GraphicsWorkshop may be downloaded from Alchemy Mindworks.
- The Acrobat Reader may be downloaded from Adobe.
- The Microsoft Word & Powerpoint viewers and converters may be downloaded from Microsoft.
- WS_FTP Limited Edition file transfer (ftp) package from Ipswitch, Inc.
Antivirus software listed in order of my personal preference:
- MicroTrends PC-cillin Antivirus Personal Edition. Sends almost daily updates which are small, painless to load and do not require system reboots. During the initial program load and file scan, It found 5 infected files that other programs had overlooked.
- Panda Highly rated, but caused major system problems when loaded before I removed Norton.
- Norton Probably one of the best known. Known to cause interference when installing new software. Although I was running an updated version, Norton allowed a new virus to slip thru my e-mail and destroy 3 computers on my network.
- McAfee This package comes preloaded with many computers. It automatically loads when MS Plus! is installed and is very difficult to remove if you decide to use a different protection program.
E-mail programs:
- Eudora Version 3.5 is free. Later versions and upgrades have a nominal charge. Eudora is my preference because there is only one known virus to ever attack this program. On the other hand, there is Microsoft Outlook Express, a freebee from Microsoft which is forced to load each time you install a new MS product and Outlook (full version) which is a paid program. Due to the amount of virus's which attack both Outlook programs and security leak problems, both versions are banned by many institutions and corporations.

What is RAR anyway? RAR (or more commonly referred to as WinRAR) is a compression program offering an original algorithm. This new way to compress files provides greater efficiency, and makes smaller archives -- especially on multimedia files, and archives with many files. RAR also offers self-extracting capabilities as well as disk-spanning (or multi-volumes).
